Ferry Communications Done Well

Skagit County is further along than Whatcom in replacing its ferry to Guemes Island. They do a good job at communications, so important in bringing such big projects to a successful conclusion. Here’s their latest email (Nov 20, 2017) on their ferry replacement project. It includes a short, concise survey for ferry users re: the ferry, use, replacement and costs. Email Rachel Rowe (address at end) if you want to receive their messages.

Good afternoon,

I wanted to provide an update on some items related to the ferry replacement project. As a reminder, we have an opportunity to apply for up to $10 million through the County Ferry Capital Improvement Program. The application is due December 31, 2017, and Glosten, naval architecture firm, has been working tirelessly to get to 30% concept design so that we may potentially be eligible for the funding.

Glosten will present concept design details and preliminary cost estimates to the Board

Details of the concept design report, including preliminary cost estimates, will be presented to the Board of Skagit County Commissioners. The public is welcome to attend.

When: Tuesday, November 21, at 8:30 a.m.

Where: Commissioners’ Hearing Room, 1800 Continental Place, Mount Vernon, WA 98273

We realize this is short notice so we will provide a link to a video of the presentation in the next edition of the newsletter.

Ferry replacement newsletter

The next newsletter for the ferry replacement project will be a combined November/December issue. We will have some pretty exciting information to share with you, including a concept drawing and some preliminary cost estimates.

Public Forum presentations available

On Thursday, Nov. 2, the Board of Skagit County Commissioners hosted the Ferry Public Forum at the Guemes Island Community Center. There were 106 people in attendance, and Glosten provided a very informational presentation. For those who are interested, Glosten’s PowerPoint presentation is available at: skagitcounty.net/PublicWorksFerryReplacement/Documents/02%20November%202017%20Glosten%20Slides%20Rev-.pdf. The audio from the meeting is available at  about half way down the project page.

Ferry replacement survey

If you haven’t taken the survey, and you’ve got 5 minutes, we would love to hear from you. Decisions that shape the future of the ferry are being made now, and we need your input. Go to www.publicinput.com/1970; the initial survey is 10 questions and will be available until December 15.

Ferry Committee meeting with Public Works coming up

The next meeting between the Guemes Island Ferry Committee and Public Works will be Friday, December 1, 2017, from 3:00 – 4:50 p.m. The meeting location is the Anacortes Public Library, in the lobby conference room. The public is welcome to attend; the focus of this meeting is the Ferry Replacement Project.

Sincerely,

Captain Rachel Rowe
