Ferry Issues Coming Before Whatcom County Council Public Works Committee 6/4/13

After a vote was delayed on an ordinance proposed for changing ferry rate calculations (see earlier article), that and other ferry issues are scheduled to be presented to the County Council’s Public Works, Health, and Safety Committee for discussion next Tuesday at 1:30 pm on June 4, 2013, in the Council Chambers ( 311 Grand Avenue, Bellingham). Members of the Committee are Councilmembers Barbara Brennar (chair), Ken Mann, and Pete Kremen.

Central to the proposed rate calculation change are two sources of ferry-related funding the County receives from the State of Washington. See the earlier article for more about that issue.

Also on the agenda for the PW Committee are:

  • project status of web-based ticketing
  • a possible ferry ticketing kiosk pilot project
  • discussion of needs-based tickets
  • status of the fare surcharge which has remained in effect since the last fare increases in 2011

This will be a Committee meeting, not a public hearing, so public participation is at the sole discretion of the Committee. The Council’s Ferry Advisory Committee, chaired by Mike McKenzie, has submitted (or will be submitting) input and recommendations on these subjects for the Committee’s consideration.

At this time, ferry issues are not on the agenda for the regular meeting of the full Whatcom County Council that same night.

  1. As a disabled combat veteran, I want to know why I get a discount on the state ferrys, but not the same respect on the county ferry?

    • Thank you sir, There is always good work in the world for a person who wants to defend the rights and freedoms of others.
