Whatcom County’s Public Works, Health and Safety Committee has added a last minute item to their Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012 agenda. They will be receiving a report from the Lummi Island Ferry Advisory Committee (LIFAC) with recommendations to implement an electronic ticketing system for collecting ferry fares. A copy of a preliminary report from LIFAC dated Nov.1 recommended the County move to electronic ticketing, and says that LIFAC found “a number of viable solutions towards achieving the goal of electronic ticketing.”
The draft report says an electronic ticketing system would provide more accountability and better ridership statistics to track all fares and waivers. Electronic ticketing would also allow for riders to pay with credit cards or e-checks, possibly even paving the way for online ticket purchases.
LIFAC recommends having an auditable process to account for all ferry passengers in place by July 1, 2013, and also recommends that the “system deployed should be fully integrated with the County financial systems no later than January 1, 2015.”
Public Works, Health, and Safety Committee meeting will be at 1:30pm Tuesday, December 4, in the County Council Chambers at 311 Grand Avenue in Bellingham. LIFAC’s updated report will be delivered at that meeting. You can see a copy of the preliminary LIFAC report here.
