Federal Grant will Fund Guemes Ferry Dolphin Replacement

Read this article in Anacortes Now, which announces major new federal funding to improve the dock infrastructure of Skagit County’s ferry system to Guemes Island. the final paragraphs tell how much Skagit County received — an impressive amount when one realizes that the 2012 full-time population of Guemes Island is ~560 people, about half of Lummi Island’s ~950 full-time residents.

Opinion Kudos to Skagit County’s government for seeking and successfully competing for federal transportation funds to maintain ferry docks (part of the transportation   infrastructure), create jobs, etc. Government that works.

It’s too bad that this news isn’t from Whatcom County about the ferry to Lummi Island.  Did Whatcom County submit such a grant proposal? If it did but failed to be competitive, why? Are similar proposals like this planned or under consideration?  (One would think that Public Works, at least, would appreciate the big infusion of Road Funds that are part of the grant package.)
