  1. I wonder if Lummi Island property owners would go for some sort of special “Ferry” assessment based on property value?

  2. I am changing part of my mind ,and that is , I didnt want to have the island develop. I still dont but with the pressure on us as an ” asset” to the rest of the area , It seems all we can do is channel it . Here comes Mainstream media. The degredation of our acceptance of diffrences and lack of tolerance and energy spent in worry are the reasons for my change. These things damage our relationships with each other in a close community, and will take time to repair, where is peace of mind?
I Support the Tribal Marina ,which is closer to thier cultural values than the casino, used to Dis them with as they try to get up from being “conquored” wasn’t assimilation what we wanted? A clean water Marina will bring revenue to theTribe, County, and improve Real EstateValues for lummi island. Its placement at Sandy Point or Gooseberry is valuable as a quick entry to the Salish sea ,San Juans and Gulf Islands, and may even connect us to the San Juans by water taxi this to me is a good thing, as we would have pedestrian tourism [less traffic] and support for Island lifestyles from the San Juans. I do not blame the Tribe, they only want what we want .To make homes, education, jobs and improve the health of thier community. The Marina for people who know the waters could be a source of revenue and pride, which is healing, not like the Casino. How will it hurt us? I hold the short sighted handling by the County accountable in dollars and cents. The tribal Marina/dock is the cheapest, fastest, safest alternative there is. We would have had another alternative route already if the county had Portage and its access developed, as they had agreed with the tribe but didnt follow through. We know what it feels like to be ignored by our elected officials as a low prioroty. and so does the Tribe. The marina is a great idea for everyone involved . lets get it done and over with. The Hotel and the Casino were well built quickly, the marina can be too. Its wise to plan ahead for traffic ,and reasonable now, to want traffic to be managed arround an area that is residential , busines and indstrial mixed use. They have been asking for this a looong time. We would want this too . Over my years I have had people argue with me on technicalities ,so they can be right , even tho they know my point is valid. This is where I feel the traffic arguement has been going. The 10 million could have been Negotiated, but was botched. I wish Lummi Islanders would come up with some Ideas and just have more meetings with the tribe ourselves. How about renaming some streets or something small and respectful. What about asking the county to make good on the Portage deal and tie us in with a dock, re routing traffic to lummi shore drive? On the 1st Reefnet Festival Lummi Tom Edwards generously offered Riley any Salmon needed from the Tribe, because the Salmon were not in yet. Is there a possibility of co-operation with the Tribal Hotel and the Wilows Spa or an other business arangement? what about a potluck over here at the grange to discuss and negotiate. What about stoping banging our heads on the wall of our representatives who dont live here, and dont know what its like. I think we will lose something important if we loose our friendship with the canoe familys of the Salish Sea, The oldest continual inhabitants of the area. We will fight for Salmon Recovery ,why dont we see the nurturing cultural [and business] values we benifit from in our indigenous people. Blow me down ,thats what I think, and theres plenty more where that came from. Dont say no, Start looking for Yes.the state of things now affords us some bad ideas in the name of brainstorming the solutions. Do you have any goofy or dubious ideas ? they might be the key.

  3. I like your words and embrace your point of view, Kathleen.
